NEXT STEPS IN DANYÉ’S CASE
We are continuing to work with his family to push authorities with subpeona power on the following:

  • Swab Danyé's uncle and step-father for DNA so they can be confirmed or eliminated as the sources of additional male DNA on the bed sheet used in his hanging death, and also seek to determine ethnic origins of the DNA found on the sheet based on prior swabbing samples

  • Digital forensics work to determine who was accessing Danyé's accounts, possibly on his last day and also in the years since, possibly through his missing iPad

  • Subpeona Apple to get into Danyé's iPhone to see if there is location data or other communications connected to the 7 hours of missing time during his final night alive

  • Follow up with person of interest we told prosecutor Wesley Bell about in Aug 2020, Marcell Foster, alleged to have shot Danyé's best friend and narrowly missed his brother only weeks before Danyé's death, held since January 2021 for the shooting of LaRico Martin, and convicted of murder only last week.

  • Investigate alleged patterns of racial bias in the work of the lead detective for St. Louis County in Danyé's case, Timothy Anderer, as well as his wife Aimee Anderer, an officer who trains new cadets at police academy, including racial discrimination suits and complaints, racist social media posts, violent anti-activist commentary said on bodycam, a growing number of citizens with stories of underserved investigations, questions around County police's destruction of the bed sheet while actively sought by Danyé's family (as heard in ep7 "Navy Knots") and more

A Message from Ray Nowosielski

On MLK Day the NAACP announced this year's nominees for their illustrious Image Awards, and we at Double Asterisk** and True Stories were shocked / humbled / beyond grateful to see our investigative podcast series After the Uprising: The Death of Danyé Dion Jones among the list! Working with the family of Danyé Jones, we uncovered much to suggest racial bias by the lead detective who rushed to judgement in determining suicide as the cause of his 2018 hanging death, despite it bearing many of the hallmarks of a historic lynching. Only last week, I testified alongside Danyé's parents before the St. Louis County Council about the failure to investigate. There's so much more that could be done to bring sunshine to these cases via a second season. Thats why I hope that you'll listen, subscribe, rate and comment, and most importantly spread the word ASAP to friends and colleagues that this podcast exists and they should listen too! If you have friends in the media, could you suggest they cover the evidence we unearthed? Please consider forwarding this message right now to friends you believe may be interested.

FYI, you’re receiving this email because I want to update you from time to time about the work of my two new media companies. Double Asterisk** is the home for my investigative and podcast work with John Duffy, and True Stories is a Creative Producer- & Journalist-driven non-fiction media collaborative, striving to tell the most essential stories of our times and the most important overlooked stories of our past, primarily through documentary films but also a media ecosystem that includes Hollywood movies, books, graphic novels, podcasts and plays. If you would prefer not to receive such in the future, just click Unsubscribe down at the bottom -- no worries! Otherwise, read on and be sure to stay in touch in the future.

In Production

WATCH THE TRAILER ABOVE. Inspired by his union uncles and father, Ray originally developed this project in 2017 with the intention of making it with his mentor and frequent collaborator Barbara Kopple, who won two Oscars for previous union documentaries. The union movement still hasn’t recovered from the infamous moment in 1981 when Ronald Reagan fired 11,000+ striking air traffic controllers.

After a successful crowdfund last year via Kickstarter, the film has received the support of The Rogovy Foundation and Adam McKay, best known as comedian Will Ferrell’s creative partner (Anchorman) who in recent years has turned out a series of incredible movies based on true stories (The Big Short, Vice). Now, Adam McKay has joined the team of The Last Strike as Executive Producer, and Chicago’s The Kindling Group, in association with True Stories, will finally tell the full story for the first time, in a film directed by Danny Alpert and co-directed by Ray Nowosielski.

For more about The Last Strike, LISTEN to Ray’s conversation with Rick Smith on the number one union talk-radio show in America.
